Johannesburg — The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) will be hosting it’s 13th annual conference at the Nasrec Centre in Johannesburg and ANC national task team convenor Baleka Mbete said it can be used as a chance to promote gender equality.
Mbete was giving a political overview at the opening of the conference and she said the league was convening the conference “to reflect on daily matters” as directed by thousands of citizens in rural and urban areas.
She called for the women’s league to also address issues such as gender-based violence, inequality, and gender equality in society.
“It is the collective wisdom in these communities that must guide deliberations that come out of this conference,” she said, adding the ANCWL is tasked with responsibility of helping the ANC broaden its mass base and should continue to be voice of women in the ANC and and the broad women’s movement, spearheading gender transformation,” IOL reported her saying.

Mbete said it was clear that women were the best people to lead the challenges faced by women and that the conference was a chance to dismantle the remaining psychological damage caused over decades.
Mbete said the governing party needs to come to terms with the fact that the era of coalitions arrived, EWN reported.
The Women’s League convener said the ruling party needs to accept that it cannot wish away coalitions.
She said the ANC cannot not afford to be idealistic when it comes to power-sharing.
Mbete said the ANC needs to take lessons from how it arrived at a democratic South Africa.
