Cape Town – Protesters in Soweto have reportedly brought ReaVaya bus services to a halt after they barred the busses from leaving the depot.
In a tweet on Monday, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) confirmed that all buses had been prevented from leaving the depot.
“All main roads along ReaVaya Bus routes in Soweto are blocked by protesters. All busses have been stopped coming from the depot and the first busses that were on route were turned back to the depot. Currently Rea Vaya services have been suspended,” the City said.

According to Times Lives, several roads in Soweto had been closed off by protesters, including those around Maponya Mall.
“From the information we received Chris Hani Road in Pimville is closed to traffic between Maponya Mall and Modjadji Street.
“In Jabulani and Moletsane, Koma Road is closed to traffic between Legwale Street and Bulani Road. There is also disruption to traffic in Diepkloof with Soweto Highway closed near Immink Drive,” the report quoted Johannesburg metro police department spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
EWN quoted one of the organisers of the protest action as saying that this was part of a build-up to an even bigger shutdown.
Service delivery and electricity woes in parts of Soweto have been brought into sharp focus by residents who demanded change, the report said.
Residents wanted Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse to address their grievances, including calls to remove informal settlements.
