Cape Town — ActionSA has demanded clarity over the R194 million tender that was awarded to Korone Engineering to restore operations on Lilian Ngoyi Street.
In a statement, ActionSA’s Zark Lebatlang revealed the party wrote a letter to Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene to demand answers regarding the tender. In the letter, ActionSA asked the following:
The party conducted an oversight visit to the Lilian Ngoyi construction site and established that Korone Engineering is owned by a South African who is in partnership with a Nigerian couple, George Olugbenga, and his wife, Pauline Khudugane Adejinmi.
The party noted the contract was previously awarded to a company without a tax clearance.
“ActionSA is deeply concerned by this recurring pattern, which appears to prioritise the interests of foreign nationals over those of South Africans. The City of Johannesburg must prioritise South Africans in all procurement processes,” Lebatlang said.

According to EWN, the Johannesburg Roads Agency said inclement weather has contributed to the delays of the restorations in Lilian Ngoyi Street. Joburg council speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu led an oversight visit on the street on Friday and assessed the progress of repair work.
The repairs were also delayed due to disputes between the city and the previous contractor. However, JRA project manager, Jeff Maluleke said Korone ENgineering were making progress despite the weather delays.
He said they were still working on phase one of the project which should be completed by August.
