Cape Town – The parliamentary process to select a new public protector has begun, and a list of 38 nominations has been released.
Acting public protector advocate Kholeka Gcaleka is among the candidates who have accepted the nomination.
The current public protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who is currently facing impeachment, has a non-renewable term that ends on October 14.

The ad hoc committee has been assigned the task of recommending her replacement by August 31.
The committee has released the list of nominations for public comment until July 21.
The interviews will take place between 21 and 25 August, whereafter the committee will deliberate on a suitable candidate to present to the National Assembly.
The support of 60% of the National Assembly is required for the candidate to be appointed by the president.
