Cape Town – A sangoma and his assistants were arrested on Friday in Mabopane, Tshwane, after they were caught digging up graves to obtain human bones for muti.
In a statement, Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) said the man were caught by security guards working the night shift at Mabopane Cemetery.
The incident happened on July 15.
“On 15 July 2022, Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) regional members received a complaint from security guards who were working the night shift at a graveyard about people digging up graves.
“The officers responded swiftly and rushed to the graveyard,” the statement said.

Upon arrival, the police found three people inside a grave busy digging.
When the three suspects were questioned, they could not account for what they were doing and where they got permission to dig up the graves.
The men were said to have also tried to bribe the guards with R1 500.
They were arrested for violation of graveyard regulations, malicious damage to property, and bribery.
