Cape Town — The Eastern Cape Transport Department confirmed that seven people died, with a furtehr nine injured following an accident between a truck and a minibus.
The accident took place this morning on the N2 highway between Mthatha and Mtentu when the two vehicles collided. The Department explained that the weather was very misty when the vehicles collided, EWN reported.
“Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery,” Spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa said.
Komisa also urged motorists to remain cautious and vigilant on the roads.
According to Newzroom Afrika, Eastern Cape Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said a taxi was carrying people from East London and that everyone was known to each other as it was a hired taxi. He also explained it was one of the worst accidents seen by the department.
He also said police are on the hunt for the driver who fled the scene and will provide updates as the investigation continues.
“We are calling on those who may have relatives they have lost to contact the nearest police station because they are working very close with us in ensuring that those who were involved in the accident, are identified,” he said.
He also explained that six of the people who were injured are in a serious condition in hospital and he hoped that there were no more casualties.
