Cape Town — Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, said out of the 429 electricity transformers the provincial government requested to have installed, 333 have now been installed and switched on.
Lesufi was replying to questions tabled by the Democratic Alliance *(DA) in the Gauteng Legislature in Johannesburg and said the new transformers have benefitted over 32 000 households that did not have electricity just three months ago, SABC News reported.
Lesufi said it was made possible through the the Energy Crisis Response Plan where the provincial government partnered with Eskom and appointed the Johannesburg City Power to deliver the transformers across the province.
“This province did not have 100 megawatts of electricity. Due to the intervention that we have made as the provincial government, we are going to deposit 100 megawatts to the grid in Gauteng. So that we can be in a position to ensure that our people in the province have electricity,” he said.
He added that 200 new megawatts will be added to the province in the next financial year to ensure the province moves out of load shedding as quickly as possible.
Lesufi is set to oversee the switching on of eight solar powered mast lights and 15 transformers in Kokosi, in what is the latest in the provinces Energy Response Plan.
