Cape Town — The Northern Cape Department of Health said it will cooperate with police in the province following the death of a 22-year-old woman at Robert Mangaliso Hospital in Kimberley.
The young woman fell from the fifth-floor balcony shortly after she gave birth. It is unclear whether she committed suicide or was pushed yt police have opened an inquest into her death, SABC News reported.
Provincial Health spokesperson, Lebohang Majaha said the clinical staff who were available during the incident would receive counselling.
“As the Northern Cape Department of Health, we are saddened to have learnt about the tragic incident yesterday involving a 22-year-old woman who succumbed to her injuries sustained after falling from the 5th-floor balcony at the Robert Mangaliso hospital in Kimberley,” Majaha said.
“The patient was admitted to the hospital after giving birth and referred to one of our nearest medical facilities in the province for further treatment and care on 14 January. The baby is currently under the care of a hospital and will be reunited with family soon,” Majaha added.
