Cape Town — The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) reported yet another case of alleged food poisoning, as one learner succumbs to an alleged food poisoning illness.
The GDE reported that 21 learners reported stomach cramps at school on Friday during their lunch break. The learners were taken to nearby medical facilities for immediate medical attention, a statement said.
“We can confirm that all affected learners were discharged later in the afternoon after being treated, and are all in good health,” Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said.
“The department is working closely with health officials to investigate the cause of the incident and ensure the well-being of our learners,” he added.
The GDE also confirmed that a Grade 6 girl learner from Thobeka Primary School in Meadowridge, had died after a suspected foodborne illness last week.

“According to information at our disposal, the learner last attended school on Friday 1 November 2024, showing no signs of illness,” Mabona said.
The learner had bought snacks from a vendor on Sunday 3 November, not from the school, and stayed absent on Monday 4 November as she was hospitalised due to suspected food poisoning.
The learners tragically passed away due to the illness last week.
“The department extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends and the Thobeka Primary School community during this difficult time. We are providing essential counselling services and implementing measures to ensure the safety and support of all learners and staff while addressing this matter accordingly,” MEC Matome Chiloane said.
