Cape Town — Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, revealed the third quarter crime statistics for the 2024/2025 period of 1 October 2024 to 31 December 2024.
In a statement, one of the key stats Mchunu revealed was that murder cases in the country were down 9.8% compared to the same period last year (7 710 cases to 6 953 cases).
Among the top 30 stations in the country for murder, the Western Cape had 12 stations in the top 30, including Mfuleni station at number 1 and Delft at number 2.
Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) featured five times, with Inanda station at number 5, while Gauteng each featured seven times and the Eastern Cape featured six times.
Each province recorded decreases in the total number of murders, with Limpopo down 29.5%, Mpumalanga down 28.6% and the Eastern Cape dropping by 11%.

Gauteng, KZN, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape remain South Africa’s most dangerous provinces when it comes to murder, and the four are responsible for 82.4% of the total murders in the country.
Minister Mchunu acknowledged the four provinces as the highest when it came to criminality and said the department considers them the “albatross when it comes to policing”, Newzroom Afrika reported.
“They pose quite a challenge. They dominate criminality in the country, and these provinces coincide with where our metros are in the country and coincide with density of our population, and therefore they are our focus,” he said.
“We are, and have, positioned ourselves accordingly in terms of how we are policing South Africa because it is clear to us that we have to do something,” he added.
The Minister was happy with the overall decreases shown across certain crime stats.
