Cape Town – The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has confirmed that two South Africans have been killed in the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel.
The conflict began when the militant wing of Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza, leading to a full-blown war, with Israel responding by launching a barrage of rockets on Gaza.
Thousands have been killed so far in the conflict.
Dirco spokesperson, Clayson Monyela, said that the verification process is underway, as one of the individuals is reported to have an Israeli ID number, and they need to determine their citizenship status.
“The Department of International Relations and Cooperation can confirm that we have been notified that two South African nationals have died in this ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel. The verification process is currently underway because one of the individuals is reported to have an Israeli ID number, so we need to determine whether there is dual citizenship or what the picture is,” Monyela said.
Dirco also extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the two South African nationals.
