Cape Town – A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for the murder of 16-year-old Deveney Nel, a student at Hoërskool Overberg in Caledon, Western Cape.
Nel’s body was found in the school’s storeroom last week after she was reported missing, having been stabbed to death.
On Friday evening, detectives from the Serious Violent Crimes (SVC) unit apprehended the suspect, who has been charged with murder.
He is set to appear in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 August 2024.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, praised the detectives for their swift action.
“We will spare no resources in getting to the perpetrators of crime. Gender-based violence and femicide is a priority for the South African Police Service. Hence we welcome this arrest “ Patekile said.
The investigation into Nel’s death continues as the authorities pursue all leads in the case.
