Cape Town – A 12-year-old child has been arrested in Mpumalanga for allegedly stabbing and killing another boy during a game.
The incident took place in Matsulu C, Mbombela.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the children were playing with a third child when a fight broke out.
The witness, also 12 years old, informed the police that the deceased boy had slapped the alleged perpetrator, who then retaliated by stabbing him with two broken beer bottles before fleeing.
“The victim’s family immediately took the victim to the clinic where he later succumbed to his injuries.
“A murder case was opened at Matsulu Police Station and the minor suspect was later located and arrested that day around 3 pm,” IOL quoted police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala as saying.
The alleged perpetrator was apprehended by the police on the same day, and probation officers are handling the arrest of the minor.
The child will undergo an assessment before appearing in court.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela described the incident as a reflection of “societal moral decay” and called on community leaders to collaborate with law enforcement to rehabilitate communities, News24 reported.
