Cape Town — Twelve people were killed and more than 40 were left injured following a tragic bus crash near the OR Tambo International Airport.
The City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, said in a statement that the injured patients were taken to OR Tambo, Thembisa, and Edenvale hospitals .
Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, sent condolences to the families who had lost loved ones and those recovering from injuries.
“To see so many bodies lying around is quite saddening, and the city feels for the families who would have expected to see their loved ones return home later today. Our hearts are heavy right now,” Mngwevu said.
Mngwevu said the city would work tirelessly to find the cause of the accident, and police investigators were combing the scene to find a shred of evidence as to what happened and whether there were more vehicles involved in the accident.
According to TimesLIVE, the bus reportedly overturned at the R21/R24 split, causing a huge traffic jam and lane closures heading to the airport. Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson William Ntladi said the bus jackknifed and rolled several times.
“We have counted so far 12 fatalities — all adults. Nine are male and three are female. A number of other patients have been transported to various hospitals. The scene is ongoing and further information will follow later,” he said.
