As travellers return to the air thanks to the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines, a new airline is planning to take flight in Ghana in the next few months.
The Accra-based passenger carrier will most likely be named Air Ghana, according to Bloomberg, and will be 75% owned by EgyptAir, which will supply it with four Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The state-owned Egyptian airline is also in talks with Sudan’s state carrier Sudan Airways, possibly to set up a transport hub, says CEO Roshdy Zakaria.
‘To spread in Africa, that is our main goal,’ he says. ‘When we have a hub somewhere in the middle of Africa, that will give us a chance to reach new destinations.’
Ghana’s national airline, formed in 1968, was liquidated in 2005.
