Construction of Kenya’s Dongo Kundu special economic zone (SEZ) is set to begin in Mombasa county.

Plans for the flagship Dongo Kundu SEZ include industrial parks; a free trade zone with easy access to the Port of Mombasa; tourism and business parks; as well as residential areas.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, President Uhuru Kenyatta noted that the development would ‘herald a milestone transformation’ of the coastal region and support the country’s ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ philosophy.

The Star reports that the SEZ will be developed in three phases, the first of which will be completed by 2023. Phase 1 includes port berths and the Port of Mombasa’s second container terminal, adding 470 000 TEUs of capacity.

The SEZ will promote the country’s blue economy as well as host facilities to process Kenya’s raw materials, such as cash crops, fruit and vegetables.
