When it comes to filling leadership roles, it seems African countries are starting to place more emphasis on women than the rest of the world.
An annual report by global management consulting firm McKinsey and Company shows that African women hold 23% of positions at executive committee level (the second-highest worldwide), compared with the global average of 20%.
Southern Africa has the highest representation of women in senior management positions (20%), while East Africa, with 35%, claims top spot comes when it comes to female parliamentarians. According to a Mail & Guardian report, Africa – with 24% of parliaments comprising women – also beats the global average of 21%. Meanwhile, 60% of Rwanda’s parliament is female – the highest percentage in the world.
