An Egyptian-manufactured smartphone will soon be available in several other African markets.
Already exporting to the Gulf, Silicon Industries Corporation (SICO) plans to start selling its mobile phones in Kenya, Morocco, the DRC, South Africa, Nigeria, Mozambique and Ghana at the end of the year or early 2019, according to a report by Nasdaq.
Egypt’s first smartphone manufacturer, SICO expects to sell its products for between US$50 and US$60 to the rest of Africa.
International business development manager Ahmad el-Sawaf says the company aims to triple total production from 500 000 units this year to 1.5 million in 2019. The goal is to sell 900 000 in Egypt with the rest going abroad.
The company will introduce 14 new products next year, adding to its six existing products, which include smartphones and tablets.
Egypt’s Ministry of Communication holds 20% of the company, while 80% belongs to private investors.
