Port Louis in Mauritius has been recognised as the number one city in Africa for expats to live in, according to a worldwide survey.
The Mercer Quality of Living Survey analyses living conditions in more than 450 cities worldwide according to 39 factors, grouped in 10 categories. The scores attributed to each factor – which are weighted to reflect their importance to expatriates – enable objective city-to-city comparisons.
Globally, the Mauritian capital placed 83rd, with South Africa’s Durban (89), Cape Town (94) and Johannesburg (95) also making the top 100. African cities with the lowest ranking included N’Djamena in Chad (226), Khartoum in Sudan (227) and Bangui in Central African Republic (230), due to factors such as political instability, poverty, extreme climates and lack of appropriate infrastructure investments.
The Mercer survey is conducted annually to enable multinational companies and other organisations to compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments.
