Pooled resources

Southern Africa’s access to renewable energy has taken a leap forward.

Afrik21 reports that an independent power producer (IPP) has been granted approval to build a 125 MWp solar power plant at Karasburg, Namibia; and, in a first for an IPP, its output will be fed into the Southern African Power Pool.

The US$105 million project will be undertaken by Schonau Solar Energy, a subsidiary of IPP Emerging Markets Energy Services Company.

It is estimated that over its 25-year lifespan, the plant will produce almost 8 million MWh resulting in the mitigation of 7.8 million tons of CO2.
