Nigeria has commissioned a 700MW hydropower project, its second largest.

ESI-Africa reports that the Zungeru plant, which features four 175 MW Francis hydropower turbines, will produce 10% of Nigeria’s electricity.

Located on the Kadina river in Niger state, the plant will also support irrigation and help control flooding in the area.

The project cost about US$1.3 billion, according to the Daily Nigerian, which added that the plant was designed to generate 2 630 GWh of energy a year.

It is the largest hydroelectric dam to be commissioned in Nigeria since the Kainji in 1968.
