Relatives of Namibian citizens who die from wild animal attacks will be financially compensated.

According to Africa News, the government is revising its policy and payouts of up to NAM$100 000 will be introduced soon.

Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism said nine people were killed by wild animals in 2016 and six in 2017. So far this year four have died – three due to crocodile attacks and one by a hippo.

However, the government will not pay out for anyone attacked while in a river. ‘We will not pay NAM$100 000 for people killed by crocodiles and hippos while swimming or bathing in rivers, because that situation can be avoided,’ said Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta.
