Namibia’s Hosea Kutako International Airport is set to undergo an extensive upgrade that will increase its capacity.
The Namibian government has approved NAD245 million in funding that will be used towards modernising the check-in and departure halls, security screening points, arrival halls and luggage-handling areas, ventilation systems, CCTV and other security components, as reported by Southern & East African Tourism Update.
Located 45 km from Windhoek, it is the country’s only international airport, making it vital to Namibia’s tourism sector.
‘The airport has reached its limit concerning capacity, and therefore requires urgent expansion and upgrading to meet the demands of increasing aircraft and passenger numbers, as well as more stringent international security and safety requirements,’ says Leake Hangala, Namibia Airports Company chairman.
Construction is due to begin in March 2019 and be completed by October.
