Ghana could save US$200 million every year once construction of an e-waste recycling plant in Accra is completed. This money usually contributes to containing the health impacts of electronic waste disposal in the city’s ecological zone of Agbogbloshie, which according to Asoko Insight, is considered one of the top 10 contributors of toxic waste in the world.

The initiative – a collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Environmental Protection Agency – aims to change the West African nation’s state of e-waste management. The first phase of the project, which is set to begin by the end of this year, is expected to cost US$30 million. On completion, roughly 400 000 people will be afforded employment in various areas across its entire value chain.

Furthermore, Ghana also plans to provide existing scrap yard workers with in-depth training to equip them with recycling know-how.
