Clean moves

Anglo American is planning to move all its South African operations off-grid by 2030.

The multinational mining company has partnered with EDF Renewables to create a regional renewable energy ecosystem (RREE) in South Africa. The RREE will be designed to meet Anglo American’s local operational electricity requirements via a fully renewable supply in 10 years.

The company reports that the system will draw on South Africa’s natural renewable-energy potential to develop a network of on- and off-site solar and wind farms.

The partnership will focus on three main goals, namely implementing a 3 GW to 5 GW installation of renewable electricity and storage (solar and wind), thereby strengthening the resilience of the national grid; promoting decarbonisation initiatives across Southern Africa; and sparking the development of new economic sectors, local production and supply chains.
