In Kenya, the construction of a new oil terminal at Mombasa port is set to dramatically increase its handling capacity, from 20 000 tons to 100 000 tons.
Daniel Manduku, acting head of the Kenya Ports Authority, told Reuters that the port will be able to accommodate ‘four ships at a time, and it will also handle gas and liquefied petroleum [gas]’, adding that it will have LPG, oil and petroleum, both refined and unrefined.
The US$398 million contract has been awarded to China Communications Construction Company – this after one of its subsidiaries completed a US$3.23 billion rail line between Mombasa and Nairobi last year, before being awarded a contract to operate services on it.
Construction is due for completion by mid-2020.
