In the past decade, South Africa’s coffee industry has undergone a considerable transformation, growing from a mere 20 roasters in 2007 to in excess of 250 today.
Meanwhile, a study by B2B market research firm Insight Survey has found that income from the restaurant and coffee shop sector increased by 4.5% in May last year.
Despite global coffee prices increasing by more than 6% in January (on top of 2016’s 30% increase), coffee consumption in South Africa has risen steadily over the past few years, with annual growth of around 6%.
According to Euromonitor International, Nestle remains the country’s major player in coffee (with a volume share of 37% and a value share of 31% in total), while also dominating the instant coffee arena (with a volume share of 52%).
