A multi-stakeholder collaboration is taking steps to help South Africa’s tourism and hospitality sector recover as it prepares to welcome back visitors.

In partnership with Bidfood, the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) has announced OPUS4Business as the official app for the industry in a move to manage and limit the risk of COVID-19 transmission when people travel or go to a restaurant. The app enables establishments to record compliance with industry protocols, which are based on those set by the World Travel and Tourism Council.

After completing the initial questionnaire via the app, the business will be sent a Travel Safe – Eat Safe certificate, which can be displayed at the premises, reassuring patrons of the venue’s compliance with safety protocols. The app is also used to screen and monitor everyone (including staff, guests and service delivery people) who enters the establishment.

‘We are encouraging businesses to download the app and take their teams through the training to increase compliance in the industry and to keep staff and customers in the sector safe,’ says Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, CEO of TBCSA.

The app also facilitates contact tracing, and access to PPE from local suppliers via a digital marketplace.
