Zambia’s former president Dr Kenneth Kaunda has been admitted to hospital in Lusaka after feeling unwell, a statement from his office says.
The 97-year-old served as president for 27 years from 1964.
The statement said Kaunda is “requesting all Zambians and the international community to pray for him as the medical team is doing everything possible to ensure that he recovers”.

His illness remains undisclosed.
Kaunda, who left power in 1991, has been in hospital several times before.
He is one of the last surviving figures from the anti-colonial struggle of the 1950s.
In a tweet on Monday, President Edgar Lungu urged the country to pray for his predecessor.
I call the nation to prayer for our beloved KK who is hospitalised, that God may touch him with His healing hand. He stood up for this great nation at its most critical moment, and so we can all stand up for him in his moment of weakness.
