President Cyril Ramaphosa had a moment of “panic” on Tuesday when he misplaced his iPad just before a speech.
Ramaphosa was in Cape Town, visiting the city’s port.
According to Sowetan Live, his announcement that the National Ports Authority was now an independent subsidiary of Transnet was briefly delayed, as he said the device which contained his speech had been “stolen”.
This brought some comic relief into the room, the report said.
In a video that trended on social media, Ramaphosa could be heard saying: “I am looking for my iPad. Somebody stole my iPad.

“I had my iPad. Do you know where they took my iPad to? This is the problem of always handing out your gadgets to other people. It’s always best that I keep all these things with me all the time. I had my iPad. I had it in my hand. It’s gone. I lost it, it seems.”
This was after he was introduced to the podium by chief director of communications in the president’s office Tyrone Seale.
According to News24, the president relies daily on his iPad during speeches and meetings, opting against printed notes.
The audience chuckled and Ramaphosa started his speech moments later.
The Presidency later tweeted that Ramaphosa was making a “light-hearted point while waiting for his iPad”.
“There was no question of the iPad being missing or stolen. The President was making a light-hearted point while waiting for the iPad to be brought to him – which it was before he began his remarks to media.
