Cape Town – Authorities have reacted with “horror” to the news that the carcasses of six Cape Fur seals had washed up on a local beach
The seals, two of which were pregnant females, were stabbed before washing up on Kommetjie’s Long beach on Wednesday, EWN reported.
The news service quoted Cape Town deputy mayor Eddie Andrews as saying the stabbings were “horrific” and a blight on World Oceans Day, which was marked on 8 June.
“X-rays and post-mortems conducted by sea search and a wildlife forensics team confirmed that all six seals have been stabbed at sea. This is a horrific incident and should sadden all of us,” he said.
According to IOL, the X-ray and post mortems also indicated that the seals probably drowned “as a result of traumas sustained from the stabbing”, and then washed ashore.
The South African reported that Sea Search and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA were outraged at the killing of the seals and would work with the national government to track down those responsible and ensure they were prosecuted.
