Cape Town — Tony and Lynn Forbes, parents of the late rapper AKA, have revealed that they have grown closer once again following the death of their son.
AKA tragically lost his life in February when he was gunned down outside Wish Restaurant in Durban. The rapper has gone onto achieve great posthumous success, with his album Mass Country gaining over 40 million streams since its release in March.
Th rapper also walked away with three awards at the SAMAs as he won Male Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Best Engineered Album.
Tony and Lynn were at the event to collect awards on behalf of AKA, and the two revealed that Kiernan’s death has brought them closer as a family, as the grieve through the trauma together, TimesLIVE reported.
“It’s difficult every day. Life goes on and people go on with their lives and we have to, but I wake up with this every day. My life has changed and a part of me is gone,” Lynn said.
“I am a different person, but we soldier on. I believe if I talk about what I am going through, there’s one person that might be helped through what I say and I hope this is what it does,” she added that it was a full circle moment for AKA as his first SAMA was for Best Male Artist.
Tony added that things have been very difficult and it’s been harder because time has moved on but things have not gotten any easier.
“It’s still very difficult, emotionally. It’s still very much a rollercoaster. I still prefer to mix with people. I feel closer to Kiernan whenever someone stops and tells me a story about him,” he said.
“Losing Kiernan has brought us closer as a family. The thing about family is it’s not just about blood family, it’s also about his friends. I have gained sons and daughters,” he added.
