Cape Town — Metro FM radio personality Lerato Kganyago has recently joined the chorus of Mzansi celebrities backing Miss SA 2024 finalist Chidimma Onwe Adetshina, despite backlash from the South African public at large.
During an Instagram Live with Somizi, Kganyago voiced concern for Adetshina, urging the 23-year-old to seek therapy in light of ongoing criticism.
Kganyago also addressed a troubling trend in South Africa where black women are unfairly targeted and perceived as weak.
“I wouldn’t be part of an organisation that is dishonest. There was proper vetting that was done, proper research and proper documentation were received to proof she is South African. My opinion is based on facts. I respect everyone’s frustration. It’s easier to attack a black woman. There was a Miss South Africa a while ago, one was Portuguese,” Kganyago said.
She continued: “The only person I feel sorry for is this young lady. I hope she gets therapy. Let’s base our points on facts. Social media is so dangerous. I was a bit disappointed with the minister yesterday. The last statement he said, ‘it looks dodgy’ because now we are putting the life of this young lady in danger.”

Kganyago’s statements are a direct hit at opinions shared by the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton Mckenzie, who has seemed to have taken a stance contrary to many South African celebs thus far.
The controversy started when a social media user asked McKenzie for his opinion on the pageantry issue.
In response, McKenzie said: “I just returned from Paris and will definitely get more information tomorrow, we truly cannot have Nigerians compete in our Miss SA competition. I wanna get all facts before I comment but it gives funny vibes already.”

McKenzie then faced criticism from a user on X who accused him of engaging in “petty” rumours. Defending himself, however, the minister clarified that the issue at hand isn’t considered trivial and that he plans to thoroughly investigate before making any further statements.
“You want me to ignore people that voted for me ? You want me to ignore a legitimate question ? I will get the facts and return with an answer, this is not gossip, that video raises legitimate suspicion.”
Gayton, you shouldn’t involve yourself & your gvt over petty gossip and bullying being promoted by psychotic people, and then play to the gallery. It’s not appropriate since you’re a Minister and a diplomat. You should rather condemn the unprovoked bullying of Chidinma, Miss SA. https://t.co/gugHwOcVGE
