Another Eskom employee has been arrested, this time for theft of R1 million worth of heavy fuel oil bound for one of its power stations.
IOL reports that the man was arrested along with a truck driver employee working for an Eskom contractor after they allegedly failed to deliver the heavy fuel oil to the Matla power station and instead diverted and sold it to a third party.
The two suspects – Sphiwe Sindane, 36, and truck driver Loveless Mabaso, 41 – appeared in the Kriel Magistrate’s court on Thursday, on a charge of theft and fraud.
Authorities caught wind of the alleged fraud after Eskom received an invoice claiming the fuel had been delivered.
A Priority Committee on Security Energy investigation, which led to the arrests of the two suspects, is probing 1,586 other Eskom cases. More than 100 arrests have already been made.
In May, three Eskom employees, one of them on a short-term contract at Tutuka power station, and a supplier appeared before the Middelburg Commercial Crime Court on fraud and corruption charges related to the purchase, at an inflated price, of a shipping container. When it arrived on site, the container did not meet specifications and was worth R20 000 and not the R939 550 paid for it, reported BusinessTech.
In April, another three Eskom workers were arrested for allegedly stealing coal. Other workers have been arrested in relation to diesel theft, sabotage and other organised crime at Eskom.
