Cape Town – Truck drivers have reportedly brought traffic to a standstill on the national route that links Johannesburg and Durban in protest over the alleged “employment of foreign nationals”.
Reports said truck drivers blocked the road on the N3 between Warden and Villiers on Thursday morning.
This was after disgruntled truck drivers announced their national truck shut down from Tuesday to Friday this week, reports said.
Numerous cars and trucks were used to obstruct the N3 near Windy Corner, Van Reenen, resulting in traffic congestion from both directions, The Witness reported.
The report said traffic personnel were diverting traffic to alternative routes, as truck drivers fled the scene.
Stay away from the N3 both directions between Villiers and Warden. Or be prepared to go off-road where possible. The truck drivers’ protest is peaceful. They helped me weave my way through the blockade. @TrafficSA pic.twitter.com/mU97tFtATW

“Police are on scene and attempts are being made to tow those vehicles that are causing the blockage. The police will also be investigating this matter and are confident that the perpetrators will be traced and arrested at a later stage,” The Witness quoted Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker as saying.
All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF ASA) said that the employment of foreign truck drivers over South African drivers had been a concern for local drivers, reported TimesLive.
“We can talk as much as we want but nobody will listen to us because we are poor. If we had money we would take these truck companies and government to court. But we don’t, so people have to protest to get heard,” the report quoted ATDF ASA’s Sifiso Nyathi as saying.
