Cape Town – Stellenbosch University has reportedly launched an investigation following a video in which a white student could be seen urinating on a black student’s belongings.
The incident took place on May 15.
A statement by the South African Students Congress (Sasco) said that a white student broke into a black student’s room at Huis Marais residence and urinated on his belongings.
“On the morning of May 15, the said racist trespassed and racially attacked the first year black student in his room in Huis Marais in Stellenbosch University.
“The victim of this hooligan was sleeping when he heard a noise in his room,” the statement further indicates.

“When he woke up, the racist white boy was urinating on his study desk, books and on his laptop.
“When asked by the victim, the racist response was that it is what they do to black boys,” the statement said.
According to EWN, Stellenbosch University senior director of student affairs, Choice Makhetha said the perpetrator was removed from campus as the investigation began.
The university’s spokesperson, Martin Viljoen said that the institution was “deeply concerned about the seriousness of the incident, IOL reported.
“The University is deeply concerned by this type of behaviour and as a university wish to state in no uncertain terms that it will not be tolerated,” Viljoen said.

The university’s student representative council (SRC) chairperson, Viwe Kobokana, said a meeting had been scheduled with the victim and the university, News24 reported.
According to The Citizen, the institution was no stranger to racial incidents. In March this year, the university came under scrutiny when it celebrated International Women’s Day under the theme #BreakingTheBias and tweeted pictures of mostly white women from the university’s top and senior management level, the report said.
Sasco deputy president Buyile Matiwane said at the time that the university’s post which was later deleted, represented how tone-deaf Stellenbosch University was.
“It indicates the deep-rooted, systemically backward cultural capital of the university. Stellenbosch University is still a bastion of whiteness and lack of reform,” the report quoted Matiwane as saying.
