Cape Town – The injury-enforced absence of Damian Willemse could lead the Springboks to hand Frans Steyn a first Test start at flyhalf in over 14 years in the crucial clash with Argentina in Durban.
Willemse has been released from the squad after suffering a concussion in the bonus-point victory over Los Pumas in Buenos Aires.
It appears likely that veteran back Steyn will be called on to start in the No 10 jersey in the final round of the Rugby Championship on Saturday.
The last time Steyn started at flyhalf for South Africa was back in June 2008 when Italy visited Newlands.
Steyn scored a try and kicked three conversions in the match, but at 21 years old showed his inexperience as he struggled to manage the game.
The Springboks went on to win the Test match 26-0.
