Cape Town – The parents of one of the five men who escaped from police holding cells in Zeerust, Tshepiso Kwenampe, reportedly handed him over to the police in North West on Tuesday night.
Kwenampe and four other detainees escaped from the holding cells on Sunday.
According to a police statement, Kwenampe, 22, Joshua Sibanda, 39, Amogelang Motsiane, 36, Bengu Hlanganane, 31, and Enoch Lebeloane, 46, overpowered a police officer at the station, took the key to the cell, and fled.
“At the time of escape, the detainees were among others, facing charges of house robbery, rape, attempted murder, business robbery and aggravated robbery,” said the police.
IOL reported that Kwenampe would appear in the Zeerust Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
A manhunt continues for the other four escapees.
Police urged the public to call the nearest police station if they see any of the escapees.
