Cape Town – Umhlobo Wenene radio station has announced the tragic passing of Nomampondo Noluthando Simayi, a voice over artist who lost her life in a car accident while travelling to pay her respects at a colleague’s funeral on Saturday.
This marks the third loss for Umhlobo Wenene within a month, following the untimely deaths of veteran presenters Nomathamsanqa Rweqana and Sonwabo Yawa in early February.
In a statement released by the SABC, Umhlobo Wenene FM expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Nomampondo Noluthando Simayi, renowned for her role as Nosiseko in the weekday soap opera “Ithini Na Lento.”
Loyiso Bala, SABC Eastern Cape Business Manager, extended heartfelt condolences to the Simayi family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured colleagues.
“The latest news of the passing of our colleague has left a further void in our hearts as we were still mourning our two colleagues whom we buried last week. Amid this somber time, we are deeply distraught, and we appeal to the listeners and fans to remain steadfast and offer support to the station by keeping the affected families in their thoughts and prayers during this trying time,” Bala said.

Bala further expressed gratitude for the invaluable contribution Nomampondo Noluthando Simayi made to the station, saying: “She devoted her time to showcasing the SABC’s public service mandate in a meaningful way by keeping the fans of the soapie, ‘Ithini Na Lento,’ informed, educated, and entertained through tackling various societal issues. Through her remarkable portrayal of Nosiseko for ten years, she managed to tell an impeccable story in an authentic manner, and her legacy will endure through the cherished memories she leaves behind.”
