Cape Town – At least R9 000 was spent on transporting former president Jacob Zuma from his home in Nklandla to Estcourt prison in July, Police Minister Bheki Cele has reportedly said.
According to IOL, Cele revealed this while replying to a written Parliamentary question from Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Dean Macpherson.
“The SAPS, Division for Presidential Protection Services, undertook the following in relation to the arrest of the former president of the Republic, Mr J G Zuma on July 7, 2021, the total operational cost was R9 017.38,” Cele was quoted as saying.
Cele said 142 members of the public Order Policing and 25 Tactical Response Team members were on standby in Empangeni before Zuma’s arrest.

Of the monies spent, Cele said R8 526.63 was for soft vehicles while R490.75 was for an armoured vehicle, which was a BMW X5, likely the one Jacob Zuma was being driven in, reported The South African.
He said there was no helicopter deployed.
Zuma was incarcerated for 15 months for ignoring a court order to testify before a judicial panel probing corruption during his nine-year tenure which lasted until 2018.
He was granted medical parole by the department of correctional services on September 5, and would, therefore, complete the rest of his sentence in a “system of community corrections”.
