Cape Town – An 82-year-old wheel-chair bound pensioner was reportedly burnt to death after her home caught fire on Friday afternoon.
According to News24, the elderly woman’s body was found in the lounge area with fatal burn wounds.
This was after firefighters rushed to her home after they were alerted about the fire at around 14:30.
“The first arriving officer confirmed a dwelling well alight and immediately commenced with firefighting and search and rescue operations for the trapped victim. The body of an adult female was discovered in the lounge area with fatal burn wounds,” City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue service Jermaine Carelse was quoted as saying.
Times Live reported that Cape Town councillor Angus McKenzie, who lived two streets away, assisted in getting fire and emergency services to the scene, but it was too late.
“I knew the lady, who lived alone. She was very friendly and always helping the poor. For outings, she would always go to the nearby Spar and sit and chat to people” the report quoted McKenzie as saying.
The cause of the fire remained unknown.
Police were investigating.
