Cape Town – Police say a 3-year-old girl, Simamkele Kovu, was mauled to death by a pit bull while she was playing with other children in Zwide, Gqeberha over the weekend.
The incident happened in the street near Kovu’s house.
Police said the pit bull managed to get out of the yard where it was being kept via a broken gate, according to EWN.
“A resident stabbed the dog multiple times as he tried to save the little girl, but Kovu was bitten several times and died on the scene,” the report quoted the police as saying.

Kovu sustained several wounds on her neck and face, a Times Live report said.
“It is further alleged that the dog belonged to a teenager from the same street [who was] out of town at the time of the attack,” the report quoted Eastern Cape police spokesperson Col Priscilla Naidu as saying.
An inquest docket is under investigation.
“Police are urging residents to make sure that their property is secured and that their pet canines remain within their secured boundaries,” Naidu said, according to News24.
