Cape Town – Investigations are under way after more than 260 bricks of cocaine were seized from a vessel at the Durban Harbour over the weekend.
In a statement, Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo said the Durban-based Hawks’ SA narcotics enforcement bureau was investigating “the source or the link regarding the recovery of the consignment of suspected cocaine in a vessel at the Durban Harbour”.
Nxumalo said the Hawks team was alerted to suspicious bags of goods in a vessel that was transporting trucks.
“On Saturday 18 June 2022, the Hawks team and SAPS Operational Response Services were alerted about suspicious consignment in a vessel that was ferrying trucks.
“The team arrived at the said place and recovered canvas bags with 265 bricks of cocaine. The drugs have an estimated value of R111 million.
“Preliminary investigation was conducted and the ownership of the shipment could not be located,” said Nxumalo.
She said the drugs were seized subject to an ongoing investigation.
“No arrest has been made at this stage,” she said.
