Cape Town – The case against Parliament Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, will head to the Pretoria High Court today as she attempts to prevent her arrest.
This was confirmed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which said that her urgent application will be heard in court. However it said it would oppose the application as it was deemed “baseless”, IOL reported.
“She is seeking an order interdicting NPA’s ID from arresting her. The NPA’s ID will oppose the application as we believe it is baseless and has no merit,” said NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga.
Many political parties have called for her immediate resignation, among them the UDM and the DA, with the DA’s Glynnis Breytenbach saying her rushing to court is premature, and it looks as though she has something to hide
“What the speaker is trying to prevent is that she gets arrested at midnight and held in a cell, but that is unlikely to happen. It is more likely that an arrangement will be made for her to hand herself over, and her rushing to court is a little bit hysterical and premature,” Breytenbach said.
