Cape Town – Award-winning actress Vinette Ebrahim – who played Charmaine Meintjiesin in the popular TV soapie 7de Laan – has reportedly said that she would love to move back to Cape Town where she grew up but “is not ready to retire just as yet”.
The 67-year-old, joined the cast of The Estate as Fareeha in February this year.
She plays the character of Lorcia Cooper’s on-screen mother. Cooper plays the role of Jo in the telenovela.
“I’m from Claremont in Cape Town and would love to go back, but for now I’m still in Johannesburg.
“I’m not in a position where I can sit back and go on with life as normal without working … I take on any and all of the jobs offered to me,” IOL quoted her as saying.
The report said Vinette admitted that the City of Gold is where the money is.
And of course she has big dreams when she comes back to the Mother City, as she wants to empower up-and-coming actors living on the Cape Flats and to tackle gender inequalities plaguing the industry.
“They still pay me the same as, let’s say, 10 years ago,” she said. “I’m worth much more than that and so are my peers… I will take hands with anyone supporting my stance, something needs to be done,” she said as per the report.
When Vinette said goodbye to to the iconic role of Charmaine Meintjies in 7de Laan in 2019, many of her fans were hurt as the character was “deeply invested in family values, friendship and service to others. Her personal and familial dynamics, challenges and family issues had kept South Africans entertained for 19 years,” a statement by Danie Odendaal Productions read at the time, according to Sowetan Live.
