Cape Town – Former South Africa’s Got Talent winner James Bhemgee has died.
He was 57.
Bhemgee died in hospital after a short illness, a family friend, Rif’at Browers confirmed in a Facebook post
James became famous when he swept judges off their feet with his tenor voice and won South Africa’s Got Talent in 2010.
IOL reported that he was discovered on the streets of Cape Town when a woman heard him singing while he was working as a street sweeper.
The woman then paid for Bhemgee’s singing lessons, and he later performed with international Welsh singer, Katherine Jenkins.
He was also part of the South African leg of Andre Rieu’s tour with Johann Strauss Orchestra.
Since the news broke this morning, messages of condolences have continued to pour on social media, as friends and fans pay tribute him.
RIP James. I played this full blast today.
