Eben Etzebeth will reportedly not return to action this week for the Sharks in their United Rugby Championship (URC) match against Zebre.
According to IOL, a team spokesperson confirmed the news, indicating that Etzebeth is likely saving himself for next week’s game against Leinster.
The 33-year-old lock has been recovering from a concussion sustained in December 2024 during a Champions Cup match.
The Sharks have been cautious with his recovery, prioritising his health.
Sharks coach John Plumtree noted the uncertainty around Etzebeth’s return, Planet Rugby reported.
“I am too scared to tell you anything positive about Eben as every time I have done that before and raised my hopes we have ended up going backwards again,” the report quoted him as saying last week.
“But he is training with us and is looking really good. He trained well this week. We have the bye this week, but hopefully he will play for us at the end of the month.
“As I say, I am nervous about going for any positive timelines but right now it is looking very good.”
Meanwhile, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus emphasised the importance of ensuring Etzebeth is fully symptom-free before playing.
The Sharks are currently fourth in the URC and will face Zebre this Saturday.
