Already home to a lively start-up ecosystem, Nigeria now offers an online portal specifically geared towards promoting budding entrepreneurs.
While the Start-up Support and Engagement Portal was announced officially in November 2023, it is now live.
ITWeb Africa reports that the portal offers enterprises access to business opportunities and legal resources. Almost 13 000 businesses have already registered as well as 900 venture capitalists, 1 700 angel investors and 925 accelerators, incubators and hubs
The launch of the portal follows the enactment of the Nigeria Start-up Act in 2022. The legislation clarifies the criteria for enterprises seeking official recognition as start-ups, according to Weetracker.
By registering on the portal, start-ups are provided with an official start-up label, giving them access to a Start-up Investment Seed Fund and tax incentives.
Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani said at the time that the portal would facilitate the establishment of consultative forums, to select representatives for the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
