A homegrown solar energy start-up is helping to bring electricity to Malawians, 96% of whom have access to electricity.
Malawi start-up Green Impact Technologies (GIT) is partnering with US start-up Amped Innovation to instal 15 000 off-grid solar PV home systems, which will give 70 000 households access to electricity, reports Afrik21,
The project takes advantage of a $20 million World Bank-derived funding mechanism, managed by Malawi’s Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund (NNNF) to provide “emergency” access to energy.
The equipment, supplied by Amped Innovation and installed by GIT, will include solar kits featuring an LED bulb and charging stations for devices such as mobile phones.
The system is being distributed as part of a pay-as-you-go scheme.
According to Andi Kleissner, CEO of Amped Innovation, “access to productive solar and energy devices will help communities build economic resilience and rise above the poverty line”.
