A platinum mine in Rustenburg, North West, has handed over a state-of-the-art sports facility to the neighbouring community.
Mining Review reports that the Luka sports field, an Impala Rustenburg initiative, aims to promote sports development and leisure activities, especially among the youth in the area.
“Impala Rustenburg is proud to have successfully completed this project in collaboration with our local stakeholders. These essential facilities will help foster sporting activities, which cultivate essential life skills. We believe in the transformative power of sports,” said Moses Motlhageng, chief executive of Impala Rustenburg.
The facility, which will serve about 17 500 residents, includes a soccer field, athletics track, swimming pool and a kiosk, Platinum Weekly reports that the facility recently hosted a soccer and netball tournament for the Royal Bafokeng Sports Metshameko programme. More than 2 000 pupils from 53 schools in the area participated in the tournament, jointly organised by Impala Rustenburg, Royal Bafokeng Sports, and Royal Bafokeng Holdings.
Rustenburg Executive Mayor Sheila Mabale-Huma commended Impala for its contribution to community development and economic growth, and trusted that the facilities would be preserved and enjoyed by residents for years to come.
